ANGELA
I feel sick to my stomach as the taxi pulls up outside my house, and I catch sight of my front door, behind which is my perfect family, who I have let down with my actions. They donât know it yet, but Iâm not the best wife and mother in the world. Far from it. Portugal has changed me, just like it has changed my two companions as well.
The taxi driver has already dropped off Maya and Jane at their respective residencies, and I could see the weight of the knowledge they possess bearing down on them as they climbed out of the car and pulled their luggage from the boot. I gave each of them a wave before I left them, but it felt more like a token gesture than one with any real substance to it. Truth be told, I was glad to see them go because Iâm well aware that being around them will always make me think of what we went through on the hen do. If they are out of my sight then they can be out of my mind, for a little while at least.
I thank the driver after he has got out and helped me with my suitcase, and all that is left now is to go into my house and explain to my family why Iâm home early. The alibi that the three of us decided on is that the hotel had made a mix-up with our booking and only had us down for two nights instead of three, and we had no choice but to come home after no other hotel in the area could accommodate us.
Itâs not perfect, but itâs the best we could come up with, and Iâm sure Declan will buy it. Heâll probably just be glad that Iâm home ahead of schedule because it means less time for him to have to look after the kids on his own.
I put my key in the door and turn it as the taxi driver leaves, and it takes all of two seconds for Rosie and Charlie to hear the sound of somebody coming home before they race into the hallway and start screeching at me.
âMumâs here!â Rosie cries, probably for her fatherâs benefit in the other room before she wraps her arms around my waist and squeezes me tightly.
âCome and play with me!â Charlie cries as he vies for my attention and affection in his own way, and Iâm almost knocked off balance as the pair of excitable youngsters pull and push me in whatever direction they want me to go.
Declan appears a moment later looking very confused, and for a second, I suspect he is thinking that heâs somehow lost a day and that I have actually come back when I was supposed to. But heâs not quite that frazzled, and he is aware that Iâm back before I should be.
âWhatâs going on? Is everything okay?â he asks me, reserving his excitement about having me back until he knows that my homecoming is not a result of some sinister event.
